Six-Word Memoir and Backstory

I Don't Know, Figure it Out.

I don't know. Sometimes I really don't, but that doesn't mean I can't find out. I think that the best way to learn something new is to go out and do it. Not by sitting there waiting for an answer to come hit you smack dab in the face.

When I was younger I thought the only way to learn is to sit in a class and have someone teach it to you. However, I soon realized that that's not the only way to learn. You could learn something new by hearing, seeing, or doing. I think being able to understand how you learn and being able to find the best ways for you to learn will help you grasp and understand new ideas and concepts.

I remember when I was younger I wanted to learn how to surf. I would see my dad and his friends go out all the time and I asked them if I could go with them. Keep in mind that my dad and his friends like surfing bigger waves, waves that are around five to eight feet high. Being a little sixth grader and the waves being almost twice my size, freaked the heck out of me, but something inside me still wanted to get out there and try. Paddling out I could see wave after wave coming towards me, cresting right on top of my head. I would push the board as deep into the water as I could and try my best to get under the wave. Only to find myself getting swept up by the wave and pulled back ten feet towards the shore. None the less I kept trying until I'd finally get out, huffing and puffing for air. You'd think I finally got out, everything's all good and dandy, but no I still gotta try to catch a wave. You'd think this would be the easier part but it's not. Having to paddle with a head high wave and get the right balance and speed is a lot harder than it looks. I remember the first times I would go out with my dad and his friends, the wave would pass me by or throw me over falling into the water below. It was difficult at first, but as I continued to go surfing it began to get easier. The big waves didn't look as scary, I could paddle out pretty easily, and riding waves became a breeze. I was having fun. I was comfortable in the water and I was getting better. I was still falling now and again but that's all part of the process of learning. Now I surf for fun all the time.

I believe that the best way to learn something new is to just do it. Even if you don't know what to do, being able to go out and try, you'll be able to learn a lot more than just sitting on the shore wanting to learn.

  1. Hi Sam,

It's sick to see you catching some waves out there. I would recommend going by Hotel Del Coronado because the waves at the beach there are choice! I liked how you are a hands-on type of guy. I appreciate the hustle people put into the things they do, and your example of surfing makes the cut. Fear is what eats us up, and is the biggest hurdle in trying something new. That's why most people would not usually go out and get thrashed by waves because they'd rather focus on their tans in the salon the "natural" way. Enough bashing on other's lack of melanin pigment in their skin and more focusing on embracing those fears and leveling up in life. You never know the outcome of something unless you go and do it; what ever it is and whatever it takes. People need to get out and "JUST DO IT" like Nike.

  2. Great six-word memoir. I think I'm still the kind of person that sits in a classroom, but I wish I would just do things more often. When I do, it's not so bad.
